Characters, Builds & Core Mechanics

Build guidance for all five characters, with the generator-payoff-defense test for Ironclad, Silent, Regent, Necrobinder, and Defect.

First principle: A build is not a keyword. It is a working loop: a way to generate its resource, a payoff that converts it into damage or defense, and enough front-loaded power to reach that payoff.

Question 64 Main v0.107.1 character guide; checked 2026-08-14

What is the best Ironclad build in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

There is no single best Ironclad build. The reliable first principle is to take enough front-loaded damage for Act 1, then follow the engine the run actually offers: Vulnerable pressure, Exhaust and Block, or self-damage and Strength.

What to do in a run

Treat Bash, Taunt, Tremble, Molten Fist, and Dismantle as possible bridges rather than a forced package. Do not draft an Exhaust payoff before you have a way to Exhaust cards and still survive the next fight.

Question 65 Main v0.107.1 character guide; checked 2026-08-14

How does Strength scaling work for Ironclad in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Strength improves Attack damage, so it scales most efficiently when one point affects repeated or multi-hit attacks. It does not replace the need for Block, and it is not a universal multiplier for Poison, Orbs, or non-Attack effects.

What to do in a run

Take Strength when the deck already has attacks worth multiplying and a way to reach the fight safely. A single large attack may prefer Vulnerable or a cost/ draw solution; a multi-hit plan usually gives each Strength point more work.

Question 66 Main v0.107.1 character guide; checked 2026-08-14

How does an Ironclad Exhaust build work in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

An Exhaust build needs both a way to remove cards and a payoff for doing it. True Grit, Burning Pact, Second Wind, Feel No Pain, Dark Embrace, and Fiend Fire are examples of different links; the package is strong when it converts unwanted cards into Block, draw, or damage.

What to do in a run

Draft the first useful Exhaust effect for the current fight before collecting payoffs. A deck full of Exhaust synergies without a reliable trigger or enough front-loaded damage is a slower way to lose.

Question 67 Main v0.107.1 character guide; checked 2026-08-14

How should Ironclad survive Act 1 in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Prioritize damage that works immediately, then add Block and one scaling direction. Ironclad's healing and high-health starting identity give room to learn, but they do not excuse taking too many slow setup cards before the first Elite.

What to do in a run

Upgrade a card that changes a hallway or Elite breakpoint, use Vulnerable when it multiplies the turn's damage, and keep at least one defensive answer. A route with one safe Elite is better than a route that assumes every early fight is free.

Question 68 Main v0.107.1 character guide; checked 2026-08-14

What is the best Silent build in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

There is no fixed best Silent build. Silent's dependable engine is card flow: draw, discard, Retain, and Sly; Poison and Shiv payoffs become good when the deck can find them and survive while they scale.

What to do in a run

Take immediate damage and a group answer before chasing a theme. A Sly discard loop, Poison defense shell, or Shiv multi-hit plan should each contain a generator, a payoff, and enough draw to see the pieces in real fights.

Question 69 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How does Silent’s Sly mechanic work in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

A Sly card is played for free when an active effect discards it from your hand before the turn ends. Natural end-of-turn discard and hand overflow do not trigger Sly, Tingsha, or Tough Bandages.

What to do in a run

Start with an active discard enabler such as Survivor, Prepared, Acrobatics, or Calculated Gamble, then add Sly cards that are useful when they fire. Do not count ordinary hand cleanup as an active discard event.

Question 70 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How does a Silent Poison build work in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Poison is a delayed damage engine: apply it, survive the turns needed for it to matter, and add draw or scaling so the deck does not stall. A Poison plan therefore needs a defense shell, not only Poison cards.

What to do in a run

Use cards such as Poisoned Stab, Bouncing Flask, Noxious Fumes, or Accelerant only when the rest of the deck can handle the next fight. Mirage can turn total Poison on enemies into Block on the current Beta branch, making the payoff and defense overlap.

Question 71 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

Should Silent build around Shivs, Discard, or Poison in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Choose the line whose generator and payoff appear first while your immediate defense remains covered. Shivs want repeated attacks and scaling, Discard wants active discard plus value from it, and Poison wants time, application, and protection.

What to do in a run

Do not decide from the first themed card alone. Count how many turns the deck needs to function, what the next Elite attacks with, and whether the current reward completes a loop or merely advertises one.

Question 72 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

What is the best Regent build in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

There is no universal best Regent build. Regent wins by banking Stars or building a Sovereign Blade, then converting that stored resource into a dense damage, Block, or Energy turn; created-card engines are another route when their support is present.

What to do in a run

In Act 1, prefer cards that do two jobs. Do not take expensive Star or Blade payoffs before the deck can generate the resource, defend while setting up, and draw the payoff when the fight demands it.

Question 73 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How do Stars work for Regent in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Stars are Regent's second resource and carry between turns. A card that lists both Energy and Stars needs both payments; saving Stars is often correct because the bank can become a later burst, Block, or Energy turn.

What to do in a run

Generate before the payoff, count both resources, and do not spend Stars just to reduce the number. Radiate counts Stars gained during the turn even if those Stars are spent before Radiate resolves.

Question 74 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How does the Sovereign Blade work in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

The first Forge of a combat creates one retained Sovereign Blade and adds that Forge value to its base damage. Later Forge effects improve the existing Blade in every combat pile; they do not create a new copy each time.

What to do in a run

Use Forge cards that also perform a current job, such as Block or draw. Retain the Blade until Vulnerable, Conqueror, Replay, or a kill window makes the large Energy payment worth it, then use retrieval rather than filling the deck with redundant copies.

Question 75 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How should you use Forge in a Regent deck?

Short answer

Use the first Forge to create the Blade, then treat later Forge as scaling on that same retained card. Forge is strongest when it also blocks, draws, retrieves the Blade, or triggers a creation payoff instead of being a deck full of setup.

What to do in a run

Two or three high-quality Forge cards are usually enough. Play Parry or Sword Sage before the Blade, use Conqueror or Vulnerable for multiplicative value, and keep defense and draw for the turns when the Blade is not yet ready.

Question 76 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

Which Regent cards should you pick early in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Early Regent picks should either solve the current fight or connect a real engine: reliable damage, Block plus Forge, Star generation, Blade retrieval, or useful card creation. A flashy high-cost payoff without its generator is not an early solution.

What to do in a run

Prefer a card that does two jobs until the deck has a stable engine. Check whether the card can be played with the opening Star and Energy budget; if not, it needs a clear route to draw, generation, and survival before it earns a slot.

Question 77 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

What is the best Necrobinder build in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

There is no single best Necrobinder build. The character can turn Summon into Osty attacks and defense, Doom into delayed execution, or Souls and Ethereal cards into draw and payoff; every line still needs immediate damage and a way to survive before it starts.

What to do in a run

Draft one generator and one payoff before adding more of the keyword. If Osty is the plan, protect his HP and summon value; if Doom is the plan, apply enough Doom and live through the enemy's turn; if Souls are the plan, use their draw and Exhaust behavior to keep the deck moving.

Question 78 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How does Osty work in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Summon heals and raises living Osty's combat Max HP, or revives him at the Summon amount when he is dead. Osty absorbs unblocked Attack damage before Necrobinder, while Unleash reads current HP and effects such as Sacrifice read combat Max HP.

What to do in a run

Do not spend Osty's HP and Max HP as if they were the same resource. Use Summon before an Osty attack when current HP matters, and reserve Max HP growth for effects whose payoff explicitly reads it.

Question 79 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How does Doom work for Necrobinder in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

At the end of an affected enemy's turn, it dies if its current HP is less than or equal to its Doom. Reaching the threshold is not normally an immediate kill, Doom ignores Block, and one Artifact stack cancels one whole Doom source.

What to do in a run

Doom is a timing engine, not instant damage. Apply enough to make the enemy's next turn its last, then use Weak, Block, or a kill to survive that turn; do not assume a visible threshold means you can stop defending.

Question 80 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How do Souls work for Necrobinder in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Soul is a 0-cost colorless Skill that draws 2 cards, or 3 when upgraded, then Exhausts. Souls are generated by Necrobinder cards such as Reave, Grave Warden, and Capture Spirit rather than drafted directly into the starting deck.

What to do in a run

Treat a Soul as both draw and deck thinning. Add payoffs such as Haunt or Soul Storm only after the deck can generate enough Souls and still handle the fight while those cards cycle through the draw pile.

Question 81 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

Should Necrobinder focus on Osty attacks, Doom, or Souls?

Short answer

Choose the line whose generator and payoff are already visible. Osty is the direct damage and protection route, Doom is delayed control that still requires defense, and Souls are a draw/Exhaust engine that needs enough support to justify the extra cards.

What to do in a run

Use the next Elite as the tie-breaker. If you cannot survive its immediate damage, take a direct Osty or Block solution; if the deck already lives comfortably, add the delayed engine that improves the coming boss rather than collecting all three keywords.

Question 82 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

What is the best Defect build in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

There is no fixed best Defect build. Mixed Orbs plus Focus is the safest default, while Status/Fuel and Claw become real plans only after the deck owns enough links in their resource chain.

What to do in a run

Take immediate damage and dependable defense before filling Orb slots or adding expensive Powers. A deck that cannot survive the first few turns cannot be rescued by a powerful late Orb engine it never gets to set up.

Question 83 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How do Orbs work for Defect in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Defect's Orb plan is about passive triggers, slots, Focus, and timing the Evoke. Glass Orbs deal area damage, lose one point of base value after each passive, and Evoke for twice their current value to every enemy, so they reward early cycling rather than indefinite storage.

What to do in a run

Add Orb slots and Powers only when the deck can generate and defend. Cycle a Glass Orb while its passive is still valuable, and do not assume Strength or Weak modifies Orb damage; the current mechanic data says it does not.

Question 84 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How do Defect Powers work in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Defect Powers are persistent engine pieces: they spend an early turn or Energy now to improve future Orb, draw, damage, or resource output. A Power is only good when the current fight gives you time to play it and the rest of the deck can survive that investment.

What to do in a run

Before taking a Power, identify the exact turn it begins paying back and what protects you during setup. Prefer a Power that solves a current problem as well as a future one when the next Elite is close.

Question 85 Main v0.107.1 / Beta v0.111.0; checked 2026-08-14

How should Defect generate Energy and choose cards in Slay the Spire 2?

Short answer

Choose Energy cards by the complete loop they join. Status/Fuel needs generators such as Boost Away, TURBO, or Overclock plus a converter such as Compact; a mixed Orb deck may prefer Focus, draw, and reliable defense instead of adding a second resource system.

What to do in a run

Never draft a converter without enough fuel, and never add more fuel without checking how it affects hand quality. The same Status cards can be contested by other effects, so decide which resource consumer is the actual plan before adding both.
