Which Slay the Spire 2 Character Should You Play?

Start with Ironclad to learn the core combat economy. Pick Silent for sequencing, Regent for stored resources, Necrobinder for companion management, or Defect for Orb engines. These are learning profiles, not a power tier list.

01

Ironclad: learn the basic economy with room for mistakes

Ironclad's HP pool and post-combat healing make rough trades less punishing, while Strength, Exhaust and self-damage teach when to exchange one resource for another.

You will practise

Front-loaded damage, Vulnerable timing, HP trades and deck cleanup through Exhaust.

Watch for

Treating healing as permission to take damage without ending the fight faster.

02

Silent: turn hand quality into tempo

Silent rewards seeing several actions ahead. Draw and discard improve card access, while Poison, Shivs and Sly offer different ways to convert that access into output.

You will practise

Card order, active discard, Energy-to-draw balance and delayed Poison damage.

Watch for

Building a beautiful engine that still lacks immediate Act 1 damage.

03

Regent: bank a second resource, then spend it on purpose

Regent stores Stars across turns and can build a Sovereign Blade through Forge. The challenge is matching generators, spenders and the Energy needed to play both.

You will practise

Delayed payoff, dual-resource hands, Retain and card-creation interactions.

Watch for

Taking too many Stars spenders or Forge cards without enough immediate defense.

04

Necrobinder: manage two health bars and several clocks

Osty can intercept attacks and become a resource through Summon or sacrifice effects. Doom and Souls add separate timing and card-flow systems.

You will practise

Damage interception, companion Max HP, delayed kills and resource density.

Watch for

Spending Osty as if the next enemy attack does not exist.

05

Defect: control the Orb queue instead of admiring it

Defect turns Orb slots into passive and Evoke effects. The hard part is deciding which Orb should remain, which should fire now, and whether more slots actually help the current Channel rate.

You will practise

Queue order, passive versus burst value, Focus scaling and setup speed.

Watch for

Adding slots or Focus before the deck can Channel enough useful Orbs.
